April 16, 1920 (Game 4)

Baltimore 4 - Newark 1

It was a day of firsts for the Canaries Home Opener. First error. First home run. Most importantly it was the first win of the season for Baltimore. Powered by two 2-run homers by Louie Kramer and Andy Leonard, pitcher James Kearns provided eight strong innings in the win.

Providence 4 - Washington 1

Dobie Lutcher and Carl Chase each homered for the second straight game, providing all the necessary offense for the Commodores first win of the season.  Mark Shingle struck out six with the complete game win.   Statesmen Third Baseman Dave Drew drove in their only run on a third inning double, scoring catcher Chris Fulmer.

Philadelphia 4 - Boston 1

Charlie Manlove silenced most of the Boston batters in his complete game win over the Clippers. Outfielder Ed Crane was the only significant batter to figure out Manlove, batting 3-for-3, with a triple and a walk. Yellowjacket Shortstop Harry Koons tried to match that, hitting 2-for-2, with two walks, two doubles and one run scored.

New York 3 - Pittsburgh 2

Tern Stauffer's bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 9th was enough to put the Knights over the Hornets. Veteran switch hitter Ray Duttinger has been relegated to catch the past two games and hit his third home run during that assignment in the bottom of the 4th. Player-Manager Ray Knepp called his own number to relieve young starter Chris Henne, and his two scoreless innings qualified him as the winning pitcher.

Opening Day for the Baltimore Canaries.  The standing-room only crowd spilled onto foul territory.
